Team Magma Celebrates Four Easy Wins
Based on the results of the seeding round, the groups for the first group stage were reshuffled; the 2nd- and 4th-place teams from Groups A and B, respectively, switched groups. In Group C, Team Magma once again faced Nexus (China) and the IT Androids (Brazil), as well as FC Portugal and the SolidWorkers (China). Once again, Magma’s four victories—with a combined score of 32–0—were never in doubt. The matches against the IT Androids and the reigning world champions, FC Portugal, both ended 10–0 in Magma’s favor—and in the case of the IT Androids, the score was exactly the same as in the seeding round. Against Nexus, Magma even scored two more goals than in the seeding round, winning 7–0. The lowest-scoring match was the 5–0 victory over the SolidWorkers.
However, Magma’s two strongest opponents at this year’s RoboCup—the Chinese teams Dionysus and Apollo3D—played in the other Group D during this group stage. The big question was whether at least Dionysus would be able to put up a fight against Apollo3D, the team that had dominated the seeding round. And indeed, the two teams surprisingly ended in a “mere” 1–1 draw.
Following this good news, Team Magma is now working intensively on its goalkeeper’s skills so that, should they face Apollo later in the tournament, they might be able to block the not-quite-so-powerful shots from their strongest opponent so far. In addition, the team members are preparing for a possible penalty shootout. The Germany vs. Paraguay match at the FIFA World Cup in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico comes to mind.
