Ready for Math and Physics: The Preparatory Courses
Want to start your studies well-prepared? In our free preparatory courses for math and physics, you’ll brush up on your high school knowledge, fill in any remaining gaps, and best of all: you’ll get to know your fellow students and the campus even before the first lecture. That way, you’ll start off relaxed and with a head start! So, sign up right away.
Preparatory courses for the 2026/27 winter semester will take place from September 14–17 and September 21–24.
What are the preparatory courses in math, physics, and programming?
Whether you’re studying engineering, computer science, business, or media, you’ll encounter math and physics in many of our degree programs. The lectures assume a foundation in high school math and physics. But depending on how long ago you graduated or how your high school weighted these subjects, your level of knowledge may vary. With our preparatory courses, we bring everyone up to the same level of knowledge for the lectures.
Mathematics: We’ll refresh your high school knowledge and cover foundational topics that aren’t included in all curricula. By the way, you’re not alone if you have gaps or feel unsure about math: About two-thirds of all new students take preparatory courses.
Physics: We review the fundamentals of mechanics, electricity, thermodynamics, and optics.
Programming: Not actually a high school subject, but maybe you’d like to get a taste of it beforehand? In our online basics course, you can write your first lines of code at your own pace.
How do the preparatory courses work?
In Person: We’ll meet on the Offenburg campus two weeks before classes begin.
Supported Learning: Experienced instructors and our smart learning apps (Teachmatics & MINT-Fabrik) are here to support you.
Teamwork: You’ll work in small groups organized by degree program. This often leads to study groups that stay together throughout your entire degree program!
Flexible: Can’t make it to Offenburg? We also offer the math prep course remotely via Zoom.

Preparatory course in Math: for all degree programs that include math
Preparatory courses in Physics: for all engineering degree programs
A definite yes if you…
have been out of school for a while.
don’t have a high school diploma.
only took the basic math course or dropped physics early on.
had a grade lower than a 2.0 in school.
just want to meet people from your program in advance.
want to play it safe: participants have been shown to get off to a more successful start in their studies!

Preparatory Courses in Programming
The preparatory course is designed for all degree programs that include programming.
The programming lectures start with the absolute basics and require no prior knowledge. If you feel unsure without any prior knowledge, take the online course on programming basics. After all, the basics always remain relevant, no matter which programming language your degree program starts with.

Dates and Registration
The in-person math and physics preparatory courses are held on the Offenburg campus. In addition, there is a remote math preparatory course via Zoom, which runs concurrently with the morning classes.
The self-paced course “Programming Basics” will be made available at the same time as the in-person courses and can be completed during this period at your own pace.

Can't attend in person?
In the preparatory courses offered before the winter semester, we are offering the math prep course remotely (via Zoom). If you are interested, please register for the remote math course via Zoom. The courses will be conducted in the same format as the in-person courses, but with a mix of students from various degree programs.
The times for the preparatory courses don't work for you?
Can't make it to the live sessions before the semester starts? No problem! You can also take the preparatory courses in math, physics, or programming as self-paced courses and work through them on your own. This way, you can simply work through the modules at your own pace, whenever it suits you.

OSKAR Card Issuance (Student ID)
With the OSKAR card, you can pay at the university cafeteria, make copies on campus, and do laundry in the dorm.
If, for organizational reasons, you do not receive your OSKAR card on the first day, you can pick it up at the Admissions Office (Room A 007) provided your documents are complete. If you are enrolled in a program in the Department of Economics, you can pick up your OSKAR card in Gengenbach in Room GB 1.03, provided your documents are complete.
Note for master’s students who earned their bachelor’s degree at Hochschule Offenburg: You can continue to use your existing OSKAR card.
On the Studierendenwerk Freiburg website, you’ll find information about the OSKAR card’s payment function.

To help you get off to a smooth start, we pair every new undergraduate student with an experienced mentor. Our mentors are upperclassmen who will show you around campus, share insider tips, and help you quickly make connections within your bachelor's program.
The best part: You don’t have to worry about a thing. On the official orientation day, you’ll be automatically assigned to a group and get to know your team right there on campus. Every new beginning is exciting. And sometimes full of questions. To help you get off to a good start, we’ve put together the Student ABC. In it, you’ll find the most important things you need to know as a (prospective) freshman.
A–Z
A for AStA student union: Your voice! The AStA student union represents your interests at the University. It also organizes the best events—and university sports.
B for Library: Your space for focus and knowledge. At the Offenburg and Gengenbach campuses, you’ll find quiet study areas and access to tons of books and eBooks.
C for Credits: Your currency for graduation. 1 credit represents 30 hours of work. You typically earn 30 credits (ECTS) per semester.
D for Denken wird Machen: Our motto! With us, theory doesn’t stay stuck in the books. We tinker in labs and work on real-world solutions.
E for Erasmus+: Spain, Finland, or overseas? Through the International Office, you can study abroad during your degree. We connect you with over 90 partner universities worldwide.
F for Vacation: Officially, they’re not semester breaks, but non-lecture periods. This is the perfect time for internships, assignments, or just to recharge your batteries. Need a longer break? A leave semester is possible under certain conditions.
G for Money: Studying costs money, but there are solutions. From BAföG to scholarships to student loans—we’re happy to advise you. Special tip: With StudiumPLUS, you can combine vocational training or a traineeship with your studies and earn your own money right from the start.
H for Lecture Hall. Your place for new knowledge. This is where lectures and seminars take place. And besides studying, the lecture hall is a great place to connect with your fellow students.
I for International: HSO is diverse! We welcome students from all over the world. This exchange enriches our campus and makes us a globally connected community.
J for Job Prospects: Nearly 70% of our graduates find their dream job within 3 months. We connect you with over 150 partner companies and recommend that you create a profile on JobTeaser right away.
K for colloquium: Don’t be intimidated by the name! This is usually the final academic presentation following your thesis. You present your findings and demonstrate what you’ve learned.
L for Lab: Even if it sounds clinical and theoretical at first: this is where things get hands-on. Labs are specially equipped rooms where practical exercises take place. Hands-on work and experimentation are expressly encouraged!
M for student ID number: Your personal ID at HSO. You’ll receive it upon enrollment. Make sure to memorize it or check your OSKAR card. You’ll need it for almost everything.
N for Network: Take advantage of the close ties to the business community. We partner with over 150 companies in the region. Your opportunity: At our annual career fair, you’ll make direct connections with employers.
O for Offenburg: Your (new) home. Small enough not to get lost, and big enough for everything you need. Short distances between campus, city, and nature included.
P for practical semester: Get out of the lecture hall and into the workplace. You’ll spend an entire semester at a company of your choice. This way, you’ll gain real-world work experience while you’re still in school.
Q for Spoiled for Choice: With so many cool degree programs, it’s not easy. Use our study counseling services if you need guidance. Or simply study everything: with startING.

T for Thesis: The finale! With your bachelor's degree or master's thesis, you demonstrate that you can tackle a topic independently and with academic rigor. Often, the thesis is developed in close collaboration with a company.
U for Updates: Our students receive all information and updates via the intranet and the HSO app. By the way: The app is also available for visiting guests and alumni.
Friends Association: In this association, companies, graduates, and supporters help the HSO and our students. For example, through advice, networking, or financial support.
W for Housing: Still looking for an apartment? The Studierendenwerk Freiburg Office is your point of contact for the dormitories in Offenburg and Gengenbach.
X for X-Opportunities: At HSO, there are countless ways to take your mind off your studies. Work up a sweat with university sports or find the right note in the orchestra. And after a day on campus? Cozy pub nights or game nights await you.
Y for Yes, you can: We believe in you. If you ever hit a snag, our mentors and the study counseling office are here to support you.
Z for (Semester) Dates: The winter semester usually begins in early October, and the summer semester in mid-March. It’s best to mark the exam period on your calendar right away: It typically falls at the end of the lecture period and during the first two weeks of the non-lecture period.
