Your Paths to a Trainee Program

We offer you maximum flexibility. Simply choose the trainee program that best fits your current situation:

Bachelor's program PLUS Trainee

  • Start as early as the 1st semester: You sign a StudiumPLUS trainee contract with your partner company from the 1st through the final semester. Throughout your entire bachelor's degree program, you’ll be a permanent team member at your partner company during the practical phases. (Duration: 3.5 years)

  • Start in the 3rd semester: You sign the StudiumPLUS trainee contract starting in the 3rd semester and work at the company during the practical phases until you complete your bachelor’s degree. (Duration: 2.5 years)

Master’s program PLUS Trainee

  • Start in the 1st semester: The trainee program can be continued seamlessly or started for the first time during your master’s studies. The StudiumPLUS trainee contract for the master’s program begins in the 1st semester. (Duration: 1.5 years)

StudyPLUS Trainee Program Overview

The trainee program is structured so that academic and practical phases mesh perfectly, like the gears of a machine. Your salary continues to be paid reliably throughout the entire program—even when you’re studying for exams or attending lectures.

  • During the semester: You focus entirely on your lectures and seminars. There are no set work hours at the company, so you can keep your mind clear for studying.

  • During the non-lecture period: This is when you get hands-on experience. You’ll typically spend the semester break (minus your vacation time) at the company.

  • Practical Semester & Final Thesis: You’ll spend the entire practical semester at the company. You’ll also write your final thesis there. This way, you’ll be working on real-world solutions instead of just writing something that ends up in a drawer.

What exactly is a trainee program?

Traditional trainee programs don’t start until after graduation. With the Trainee Study Program, you begin your career while you’re still at the University. As a trainee, you’re a full-fledged member of a team at a partner company and are prepared for your future role and responsibilities. You’ll grow into real-world projects, take on responsibility, and gradually become an expert in your field.

When can I start as a trainee? 

For the bachelor's program, it starts in the first semester. However, you can also begin the trainee program in the third or fourth semester of your bachelor's degree. For the master's program, you start as a trainee right from the first semester.

How do I find a partner company?

Yes! Many well-known companies in the region work closely with us. Take a look at our list or simply reach out to the company of your choice directly—it’s often possible to get started even with new partners.

When should I start making applications for trainee positions?

It all depends on where you are right now. Unlike the StudiumPLUS Ausbildung model, you often start at a University first and then look for a partner:

  • For a bachelor's program: Ideally, you’ll submit your application during your first or second semester. That way, you’ll have plenty of time to ace your first exams and then hit the ground running as a full-fledged trainee at your company starting in the third semester.

  • For a master’s program: Here, you can hit the ground running and submit an application even before you start your studies, so you can combine theory and practice right from the first semester.

  • The process: You enroll at HSO in your desired degree program. At the same time, you choose a suitable company from our network or actively reach out to your preferred company. As soon as you’ve reached an agreement, we’ll finalize the cooperation agreement.

Do I have to organize the practical training periods myself? 

No, your work schedule at the company is carefully coordinated with your partner company and is based on your non-lecture periods. This makes it easy to plan your studies.

What about the recognition of academic achievements?

That's a big plus: Courses you take as part of your practical training can, under certain conditions, count toward your degree as an ungraded required elective. This helps you save time in your studies!

In 1980, Günther Zimmer—who had developed an interest in technical processes at an early age—founded Zimmer Technische Werkstätten, largely out of necessity, to finance his own farming operation. In an old converted cowshed in Rheinau-Freistett, he worked alongside his father and brother to develop a standardized gripper that simplified industrial manufacturing processes and could be used in a variety of applications.
