Everything You Need to Know
Course Content
We’ll prepare you to analyze complex processes and optimize them both technically and economically. To do this, you’ll start with the engineer’s toolkit: mathematics, physics, and chemistry. Then you’ll move on to subjects such as ecology, thermodynamics, and plant engineering. You’ll learn how to balance material and energy flows and design process engineering models.
Starting in the 4th semester, you’ll choose your area of focus and pursue a specialization in environmental or energy process engineering or water technology:
Environmental Process Engineering
How can we prevent environmental pollution? In this specialization, you’ll learn how to detect and analyze pollutants using state-of-the-art methods. And we go even further: Together, we’ll develop processes that prevent environmentally harmful substances from being produced in the first place. Against the backdrop of climate change and resource scarcity, you’ll design solutions for a truly sustainable circular economy.
Energy Process Engineering
Become an architect of the energy transition! Here, everything revolves around how we efficiently use and intelligently store renewable energy. You’ll tinker with cutting-edge technologies like Power-to-X, solar technology, and state-of-the-art battery and fuel cell technology. And you’ll learn how different forms of energy can be optimally integrated to power industrial processes cleanly and efficiently.
Water Technology
Clean water is our most important resource. In water technology, you’ll learn how we obtain drinking water and treat wastewater so that it remains in the cycle. Using biological and mechanical processes—such as membrane technology and filtration—you’ll develop solutions for the growing global population. In our labs, you’ll work on processes that are still in the research phase today but could change the world tomorrow.
Perspectives
After you graduate, you’ll be in demand as an engineer working toward a greener world. You’ll work wherever sustainable solutions are being developed:
Industry & Manufacturing: You’ll optimize material cycles and develop low-emission manufacturing processes for food, cosmetics, and chemical products.
Engineering Firms & Plant Construction: You’ll plan and oversee the construction of water treatment systems and renewable energy generation facilities.
Environmental agencies & associations: You’ll analyze processes based on environmental regulations and assess their ecological impact.
Applied Research: You’ll work in labs or research institutes on the practical advancement of technologies such as membrane filtration or Power-to-X.
Fees and Funding
Semester Tuition and Fees
Hochschule Offenburg charges an administrative fee of 80.00 euros per semester and a social contribution of 65.00 euros for the Studierendenwerk Freiburg. In addition, the University’s student body charges all enrolled students a student body fee of 25.00 euros per semester to fulfill its responsibilities. Students on leave of absence from their studies are also required to pay these fees; however, foreign students enrolled on a temporary basis are exempt pursuant to Section 60(1), sentence 2, of the Higher Education Act (LHG).

Note: You pay the semester fee to Hochschule Offenburg; however, you are enrolled at both Hochschule Offenburg and Freiburg University of Education.
Additional Costs for International Master's Programs
Students in international master's programs must also pay a flat-rate service fee of 150.00 euros per semester.
Tuition Fees for International Students and Students Pursuing a Second Degree
Since the 2017/18 winter semester, universities in the state of Baden-Württemberg have been charging international students tuition fees of 1,500.00 euros per semester and students pursuing a second degree 650.00 euros per semester.

Exceptions to Tuition Fees for International Students:
According to Section 3 of the LHGebG, international students who are not citizens of an EU/EEA country and do not hold a German university entrance qualification are required to pay tuition fees. However, the law provides for a few exceptions.

Pursuant to Section 6, Paragraphs 4 and 5 of the LHGebG, Hochschule Offenburg may fully or partially exempt a limited number of international students from tuition fees if it deems them to be particularly gifted. The requirements, etc., are set forth in the bylaws governing tuition fee exemptions for international students based on exceptional talent. Students at the University can find more detailed information in the relevant announcement on the intranet.
BAföG
Information about BAföG is available on the website of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. If you have any questions about BAföG, the Freiburg-Schwarzwald Studierendenwerk—which is responsible for Hochschule Offenburg—will also be happy to assist you under the “Money” section. You can submit applications for financial aid at the Studierendenwerk’s branch office on the Offenburg campus.
