Everything You Need to Know

Course Content

In our studios, labs, and workshops, we combine theory with hands-on experience—whether it’s picking up a camera, a pen, or a control knob.

Here’s what you can expect in the creative fields:

  • Film: Produce feature films, documentaries, and promotional videos using Hollywood-level equipment (e.g., ARRI Alexa XT).

  • Animation: Create worlds in 2D, 3D, or stop-motion, and master visual effects as well as VR/AR applications.

  • Sound: Compose film scores, jam in the recording studio, and learn mastering techniques for sound art and games.

  • Graphic Design: Create striking designs for print, web, and interactive media.

  • Media Art: Break new ground with interactive installations and performances in public spaces.

Your Path to Becoming a Creative Professional:

During the first 3 semesters, you’ll learn the basics and explore your options. You’ll shoot your first test films, record ambient sound, create layouts, and collaborate with a team to produce your first animated film. You’ll learn to critically reflect on your work.

In the second phase of your studies, you’ll choose your favorite areas of design. You’ll devote an entire year to a major project. For example? A feature film or documentary as part of a team, a traditional animated film, or a computer animation that you model, animate, texture, and finalize in the render farm.

You’ll spend one semester in media business and build valuable contacts at agencies or production companies. The program concludes with a design project serving as your bachelor’s degree thesis.

Perspectives

After graduation, you’ll launch your career where creativity meets technology. Our graduates are in high demand in:

  • film and TV production (directing, cinematography, post-production)

  • Animation studios and the gaming industry (VFX, 3D art)

  • Advertising agencies (art direction, web and interaction design)

  • Sound studios (sound design, music production)

  • Independent media art and cultural management

What should be included in your portfolio?

Show us what you’ve got! Select work from at least 1 of these 7 areas:

  • Drawing & Painting: still life, figure, architecture, landscape, portrait, fantasy, sketches (representational or free artistic; graphic or in color); formats up to a maximum of DIN A0, at least 10 drawings/paintings.

  • Graphic Design & Typography: Brochures, flyers, logos, posters, etc., at least 10 pieces.

  • Photography: Prints of photos or digitally edited photos; at least 10 photos (preferably more), arranged thematically and mounted on cardboard.

  • Audio, Sound & Music: Composed sounds, songs, improvisations, on a USB drive.

  • Film & Video: Feature films, documentaries, artistically crafted vacation films, camera experiments, screenplays, storyboard sketches, and texts (stories) on a USB drive or in printed form.

  • Animation: Stop-motion films (e.g., clay), 2D animations (e.g., short hand-drawn or cutout animations), 3D animations (e.g., Blender) or 3D modeling (computer graphics), comics, character designs, and storyboards on a USB drive or printed out.

  • Interactive media: websites, web design, VJing, installations, performances, theater productions, texts, and artistic concepts on a USB drive or in printed form.

A few tips:

  • Design Areas 1–3: Neatly mount smaller works and photos onto cardboard and organize them by theme, motif, or design style. Please include at least 10 copies of each in your portfolio.

  • Design Areas 4–7: Submit your digital works on a USB drive and please attach the drive to a piece of cardboard.

  • Save digital files (.mp4, .wav, or .mov) so that they play on all computers. It’s best to test this briefly with friends.

  • Don’t forget the credits for film and music: Include the title, contributors, duration, and the roles you took on (director, cinematographer, editor, sound, etc.).

  • Write your name on the front of the portfolio and include a table of contents listing the selected sections.

Don’t be afraid—we’re not looking for polished professionals!

We don’t expect perfect masterpieces. We’re interested in your ideas, your willingness to experiment, and your personal perspective. You can include all of this in your portfolio:

  • a short video that’s creatively or thematically interesting

  • a first attempt at animating objects or characters frame by frame

  • Sketches of fantasy characters you’ve created yourself

  • stories you’ve written yourself

  • Storyboard sketches for a future film project

  • Photo series that explore, abstract, or reinterpret a specific theme

  • Sounds and songs arranged by me

  • Logo designs and youthful graphic design

  • Simple sketches and wild drawings or paintings.

Go for it! Artists are brave.

2. Complete and submit the online application

The application portal is expected to open in December.

Fill out the pages in the online application, upload all your required documents, and submit them electronically.

Note: Please submit your application only if you have submitted a portfolio for portfolio review by October 31. Otherwise, you will not be able to submit an application again until the following year.

3. The Entrance Exam (December 2026)

Did your portfolio impress us? If so, you’ll receive your invitation to the exam in about two weeks. The exam will take place in December: as a take-home assignment and as a personal interview at our University in Offenburg.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A computer with a camera, microphone, and stable internet connection.

  • The Zoom software. It’s best to test everything out in advance when you have some free time.

  • Your tools: camera, microphone, musical instruments, paints, brushes, pencils, paper, software—basically, everything you need for your artistic work.

We’ll email you all the details about the process in plenty of time. About one week after the entrance exam, you’ll receive notification of your acceptance. That way, you can start your Christmas break with some good news! Classes begin in mid-March.

Highlights from the study program

Werkschau by the Media Department
