Europe's Competitive Advantage – How International Cooperation Strengthens Regional Innovation
A company formulates a challenge—not as a fully defined task, but as a starting point for new ideas. A student from Strasbourg recognizes a pattern in this that is familiar to her from France. A developer from Baden contributes a pragmatic technical solution. A civil society representative adds the social perspective.
Through this exchange, an approach emerges that is greater than the sum of its parts. It is precisely these kinds of processes that lie at the heart of the European university alliance ChallengeEU.
As a founding member, Hochschule Offenburg is part of a network of nine universities in nine countries. Together, they are working to align research, teaching, and knowledge transfer more closely with real-world challenges—from sustainable development and digital transformation to social cohesion.
At its core, the goal is to view innovation not in isolation, but to develop it collaboratively with businesses, public sector actors, and civil society. ChallengeEU relies on practice-oriented formats in which students and researchers work with partners on concrete problems. This leads to solutions that not only work technically but are also socially relevant.
The Sustainable Futures Idealab 2025 demonstrated what this can look like in practice. Five challenges from the region—ranging from inclusive tourism to the circular economy and socially just climate protection—were addressed by international teams in collaboration with companies, municipalities, and civil society organizations.
Within a day and a half, the teams developed initial prototypes, concepts, and new approaches to collaboration. What was crucial was not so much the individual idea as the diversity of perspectives: technical, social, and cultural approaches intertwined and opened up new paths to solutions.
ChallengeEU thus expands the region’s innovation ecosystem. Companies gain access to international ways of thinking, additional expertise, and new forms of collaboration. At the same time, regional issues are integrated into a European context—where they are further developed.
The goal is clear: innovation should emerge where real challenges exist. And it should be designed to be economically viable, socially relevant, and effective in the long term.
In a nutshell: ChallengeEU
ChallengeEU is an alliance of nine European universities with approximately 83,000 students and 9,000 staff members. It brings together research, teaching, and knowledge transfer within a shared European network and promotes the development of solutions to key societal and economic challenges.
