8. “Industry on Campus” Workshop: How Regional Industry Is Responding to Global Uncertainties
Hornberg, April 14, 2026 – How can industrial companies maintain their competitiveness in times of global uncertainty? This question was the focus of the 8th workshop of the “Industry on Campus” (IoC) project, for which representatives from industry and the University gathered at the Hotel Schloss Hornberg. The guiding principle for the upcoming project phase (2027–2032) is clearly stated:
“Countering global uncertainty with local strength.”
The focus is on specifically strengthening regional industry through closer cooperation among companies as well as with the University. The future topics were analyzed from a technical perspective by, among others, Prof. Alfred Isele, Prof. Dr. Marco Schneider, and Prof. Dr. Günther Waibel, who outlined key areas of action for the coming years.
The technical presentations made it clear that, in particular, the intelligent use of data, automation, and standardized processes are crucial levers for future viability. Automated CAD/CAM processes enable productivity gains, relieve skilled workers of routine tasks, and simultaneously reduce sources of error.
The use of artificial intelligence is also becoming increasingly important: Through the targeted analysis of large amounts of data, manufacturing processes can be optimized, costs reduced, and more informed decisions made. In addition, examples such as innovative vibrating conveyors demonstrated that technological advancements can unlock new efficiency potential even in established sectors. An accompanying survey confirmed these key areas: Companies are particularly interested in AI applications as well as solutions for improving efficiency, sustainability, and technology transfer.
Schondelmaier GmbH Press Shop: Broad Manufacturing Expertise and Deep Technological Know-How
A particular highlight of the workshop was the insight into the production facilities of the host, Schondelmaier. At the start of the workshop, Oliver Oehler, Head of Development at Schondelmaier, gave a comprehensive presentation of the company and provided an in-depth overview of its technologies, vertical integration, and strategic direction. During the subsequent tour of the stamping plant, which took place in several groups, it became clear that the company’s strength lies not only in cold mass forming itself, but also in the exceptional breadth and depth of its manufacturing capabilities. In addition to the forming technology, the highly advanced secondary processing was particularly impressive—for example, in the areas of turning and milling, even with challenging materials such as aluminum. This combination of the core process and technologically sophisticated finishing processes enables end-to-end, high-quality manufacturing from a single source.
At the same time, the potential of cold solid forming in terms of energy and resource efficiency became apparent: Compared to purely machining processes, material usage and energy consumption can be significantly reduced. This results not only in cost advantages but also in more sustainable production processes—an aspect that is becoming increasingly important against the backdrop of rising demands for CO₂ reduction and resource conservation. The high level of technological sophistication and process integration impressively demonstrated what modern industrial production can look like today: efficient, precise, and at the same time resource-efficient.
