Plastic Waste Is Turned Into High-Tech Tools

Through the “Bottle2Print” upcycling project at Hochschule Offenburg, boarding school students are discovering how climate protection and creativity go hand in hand.

Shortly before summer break, 9th- and 10th-grade students from the Klosterschulen Offenburg visited the physics lab at Hochschule Offenburg to explore how a discarded plastic bottle can be turned into an innovative smartphone holder. As part of the forward-looking upcycling project “Bottle2Print,” they had already delved deeply into the issue of microplastic pollution in local waterways two months earlier during a lecture by Prof. Dr. Melanie Broszat. The second workshop focused on the project’s core objective: to reduce the use of expensive virgin materials through clever upcycling while actively preventing plastic waste.

The students had diligently collected plastic waste in advance, amassing more than 30 kilograms of raw material. During their visit to the physics lab at Hochschule Offenburg, they used a specially built machine (the “Pull-Struder”) to transform this material into high-quality PET printing filament using the so-called “pulltrusion” process. What makes this method special is that during upcycling, the plastic is not completely melted down but is reshaped through a combination of targeted heating and mechanical energy. This preserves the material and drastically reduces energy consumption compared to conventional recycling processes.

The PET printing filament produced in this way was then taken to the Maker Space at Hochschule Offenburg. There, the ninth- and tenth-grade students first translated their 20 product designs—which they had created themselves in advance—for smartphone holders into precise engineering drawings. In doing so, the students impressed with their inventiveness and sophisticated details regarding ergonomics, user experience, and acoustic design. For example, one design incorporated sound-amplifying cavities that function as passive speakers. Others allowed for a perfectly calibrated tilt angle for optimal visibility or incorporated a wireless charging station. In addition, the ninth- and tenth-grade girls presented their ideas in short promotional videos they had filmed themselves. They then watched as real prototypes of their own designs were created step by step using 3D printing, based on their construction drawings and the PET filament they had produced. At the end of the workshop, the students voted on the winning design, which impressed them the most in terms of creativity, technology, and sustainability.

The “Bottle2Print” project at Hochschule Offenburg is funded as part of the Baden-Württemberg ideas competition “BWGreenLabs.” Through this initiative, the Ministry of Science, Research, and the Arts supports innovative ideas aimed at reducing the ecological footprint of research laboratories. With projects like “Bottle2Print,” Hochschule Offenburg demonstrates that sustainable research not only saves resources and costs but also inspires the next generation of scientists.
