Everything You Need to Know

What's it about?

The master's degree program in medical technology at Hochschule Offenburg is the right choice for you if:

  • You want to further specialize in the knowledge you gained during your bachelor's degree in medical technology at Hochschule Offenburg and enhance your career prospects!

  • You come from another University or college and want to expand your medical technology knowledge into new and exciting areas!

  • You have completed a completely different technology-related bachelor's program and now want to pursue a specialization in the field of medical technology!

  • You want to spend half a year intensively exploring a topic related to medical technology as part of your master’s thesis and thus become an expert in the field!

Medical technology is technology for people—technology that inspires!

Advances in healthcare now require the collaboration of many disciplines, at the center of which are Medical Technology Professionals who can understand and apply the language of all stakeholders. This knowledge represents one of the most important interdisciplinary qualification goals, supported by the interdisciplinary nature of the master's program in medical technology.

Course Content

The focus areas of the bachelor's program in medical technology are consistently carried forward into the master's program of the same name and taken to a higher level.

Students from other universities and colleges, as well as those in technology-related degree programs, are warmly welcome and need only be willing to familiarize themselves independently with the content of the bachelor's program in medical technology or to make up any missed courses, if necessary.

The specific content of the master's degree program in medical technology can be found in the Study and Examination Regulations linked here and in the module handbook.

Course of Study

The master's degree program in medical technology at Hochschule Offenburg spans three semesters. The first two semesters consist of coursework, while the third semester is reserved exclusively for the master’s thesis, which can therefore also be completed abroad. Unlike the bachelor's thesis, which is limited to 12 credits, the master's degree gives you the opportunity to spend half a year intensively exploring a specialized field and becoming an expert.

The curriculum has been designed so that students can begin their studies in either the winter semester or the summer semester. The first two semesters include the following courses:

  • Advanced Mathematics

  • Numerical Methods

  • Management for Engineers

  • Leadership and Organizational Theory

  • Development and Introduction of Medical Devices

  • Robotics

  • Electromagnetic Fields in Medizintechnik

  • Modeling and System Identification

  • MATLAB and Simulink lab

Additional courses totaling 11 of the 60 credits can be selected according to individual interests. In particular, students have the option to take the elective “Applied Research” and participate in a current research project.

Of central importance are the specialization tracks offered in the master's degree program in medical technology, each worth 8 credits, of which three must be taken:

  • Implant Technology

  • Applied Neuroscience

  • Image Processing and Computer Vision

  • Applied Neuroacoustics

Starting in the winter semester 2025/26, a fifth specialization track will also be offered. All specializations include a lecture with a seminar as well as a lab.

Perspectives

The medical technology industry is considered particularly innovative, fast-growing, and promising in Germany. In Baden-Württemberg alone, there are currently over 800 companies operating in the medical technology sector (Source: bio-pro.de -> Services -> Companies in the Healthcare Sector -> “Medizintechnik” filter). There is therefore no question that this degree program is extremely attractive, particularly in Baden-Württemberg.

In general, the master's degree in medical technology qualifies graduates for engineering positions in industry and at research institutions, enables them to pursue further qualifications through a doctoral program, and opens the door to senior civil service positions with public employers.

Upon completion of the master's degree in medical technology, graduates are equipped to assume leadership positions in the medical technology industry and to independently carry out entrepreneurial and planning activities.

Career prospects in the medical technology sector are excellent. According to experts, the demand for engineers will continue to rise. One reason for this is the success of German medical technology companies on the global market. The medical technology industry seeks well-trained personnel primarily for research and development as well as for the admission of medical devices.

The master's program in medical technology trains highly qualified engineers who are equipped to meet the ever-growing needs of this broad medical technology job market. Our graduates work in all areas of industrial medical technology:

  • Research

  • Pre-development

  • Development

  • Product and project management

  • Quality assurance and quality management

  • Clinical Trials

  • admission

  • Sales and Marketing

  • Clinical Product Service

  • Service and Technical Support

  • Training and Consulting
