How can bicycle infrastructure be planned, evaluated and maintained over the long term?
The technical session began with a keynote address by Dr.-Ing. Matthias Zimmermann on the topic “Who, besides cyclists, benefits from well-built and well-maintained bicycle infrastructure?” It highlighted the many advantages of a well-developed and well-maintained bicycle infrastructure.
Four expert talks and the subsequent exchange of experiences shed light on key challenges faced in municipal practice:
• How can network planning be turned into an actionable program of measures?
• Which digital tools support planning and maintenance?
• How do you organize operation and maintenance across different responsible agencies?
• How can the condition of bike paths be systematically assessed and evaluated?
During the afternoon’s World Café, participants specialized in these topics and shared concrete, practical approaches - ranging from condition assessments and the prioritization of measures to the organization of operational services. The exchange provided an opportunity to bring together different perspectives and discuss approaches for the sustainable maintenance of bicycle infrastructure.
