It’s a great combination of academic study and hands-on experience, similar to a dual degree program. The advantage with us is that you have more flexibility in choosing your program. What requirements do I need to meet? You need a general university entry qualification or a subject-specific high school diploma (or a diploma qualifying for admission to a university of applied sciences). It’s important to note: You must first submit an application to a company for a StudiumPLUS apprenticeship position and sign your contract with that company. How do I find a partner company? We're here to support you! Check out our list of companies or reach out directly to businesses in the region. Many companies in the Ortenau region are familiar with and value the PLUS model. Is there a list of partner companies? Yes! Many well-known companies in the region work closely with us. Take a look at our list or simply reach out to the company of your choice directly—it’s often possible to get started even with new partners. When do I need to submit an application? Since you'll be starting your apprenticeship, you should submit an application to companies about one year before it begins (usually in the summer or fall). As soon as you have your apprenticeship contract, you can enroll in our program. What happens if I don't complete the training program? Don't worry: Your degree program and your apprenticeship are legally separate contracts. We'll provide you with personalized advice on how to proceed in a situation like this. Your Partners: Find the Right Match This is where theory and practice come together. Within our network of strong regional companies, you’ll find exactly the right partner to help you achieve your goals. HS Offenburg Research Institutes ACI ACI – Affective and Cognitive Institute Smart & Affectionate HCI We conduct research on human-computer interaction (HCI). To this end, we develop assistive technologies and study the perception and integration of social robots. Our research focuses on gamification, affective computing, and augmented reality. Research Projects Science Comic LinkedIn Research and Methodology In our research, we strive to find technological solutions to problems in the fields of work, education, and caregiving . Our assistive systems are shaped by our research focuses. Playful concepts from gamification help motivate users in their tasks, and through emotion recognition, affective systems can respond appropriately to users’ feelings. With the help of interactive projections and virtual reality, augmented reality makes it possible to design technology interfaces that are more intuitive to use. In addition, our work focuses on the development of social robots. Through surveys and interviews, we investigate how social robots are perceived and accepted by society. Our findings are intended to help shape what social robots might look like and what tasks they should perform. The Affective & Cognitive Institute is committed to user-centered design and development. We iteratively adapt our work to the wishes and needs of users and stakeholders. This methodology is particularly important for both assistive technologies and social robots, as they are used in everyday life and are intended to improve it. That is why we regularly conduct qualitative and quantitative studies in every project. These include not only interviews and focus group discussions, but also the collection of physiological data using emotion recognition and eye tracking. Research Projects Here you will find our HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) research projects: OER Games This forward-looking project is developing a metadata catalog that enables users to search OER learning materials specifically for game mechanics, gamification aspects, and learning objectives. We believe it is important to make research accessible and easy to understand. In our science comics, we use the power of illustration and storytelling to explain social robots, artificial intelligence, and affective HCI. Social Robots – A Science Comic A valuable robot has gone missing from a research institute, and Inspector Kira is assigned to the case. In the course of her investigation, she delves deep into the world of social robots . As Kira encounters not only scientists but also anti-robot activists, she is confronted with different perspectives on progress and automation. “Social Robots—A Science Comic” is a project of the Affective & Cognitive Institute at Hochschule Offenburg and explores the institute’s research on the acceptance of social robots. The science comic is aimed at the general public and provides information about future developments in social robots. The topic is highly relevant, as robots and automation are set to drastically change the labor market and society. In particular, the science comic offers a new perspective on the topic of “Social Robots in Healthcare .” Through an entertaining detective story, it explores various aspects of social robots. From current examples such as Paro to the emotional arguments of anti-robot activists, the comic covers a broad spectrum of topics and provides an accessible introduction to the complex field of research and technology. As a result, the comic is suitable for interested readers of all ages. In addition, the comic is intended to be made available to schools as a teaching and learning resource. Summary The prototype of a social robot has disappeared from the research lab just before the first major field study for its use in elder care. The search for the stolen robot raises many questions: What are social robots, and how can they be used? How can social robots be used in elder care? Do social robots threaten jobs? What are some possible solutions? Detective Kira investigates and finds many answers… Download Science Comic- german version (PDF) Science Comic- english version (PDF) Background Prof. Dr. Oliver Korn , director of the Affective & Cognitive Institute (ACI ) at Hochschule Offenburg, is the conceptualizer and scientific author of “Social Robots – A Science Comic .” Graphic designer Jonas Grund, as a member of the ACI staff, immersed himself in the world of science and incorporated his experiences into the comic. • Team Sweaty

HS Offenburg Studies Student Projects Team Sweaty Team Sweaty "Sweaty" began as a soccer-playing humanoid robot that has been competing since 2014 in Brazil at the RoboCup World Championship against other humanoid robots from universities and colleges around the world. It has since evolved into an interdisciplinary project and is also capable of interacting with and imitating movement patterns, for example, during a chess game against a human opponent. In its core discipline of soccer, "Sweaty" has consistently been successful, securing the RoboCup runner-up title every year from 2016 in Leipzig, Germany, through 2019 in Sydney, Australia. In the first virtual edition of this competition in 2021, the team even won the world championship title. “Sweaty” is an exciting project for a wide range of divisions, in which students can both apply and expand their technical expertise and demonstrate their teamwork skills by collaborating across various fields within the framework of the competition. Technology Sweaty is a largely autonomous robot. The goal of the project is to develop a robot that can compete against—and even defeat—the local soccer world champion by 2050. To achieve this, the team is implementing modern design and manufacturing methods and complementing them with creative ideas. The research covers a wide variety of technologies, such as motion analysis, control systems, artificial intelligence, and much more. The first variant was provided by the Nimbro team at the University of Bonn. It consists of a Logitech camera with a fisheye lens (approx. 185° field of view), which was mounted on a small motor to rotate the camera head. Separately, a more complex stereoscopic detection system was built using two USB RGB cameras (1280x1024 pixels), which are mounted on a fixed bracket 12 cm apart. The mount can be panned, tilted, and rotated around the central axis of the field of view. As a starting point, the object recognition component of the Nimbro team’s software for Ubuntu Linux—which runs on the Odroid-XU—was adapted. With this configuration, it provides simple color calibration and subsequently reliably detects the ball, the playing field, and the goals. Another important aspect of this work was becoming familiar with the ROS framework. This made it possible to establish communication with the Java software, which handles the adaptation and decision-making processes. The ball’s world coordinates could be determined with centimeter-level resolution. Without any optimization, a frame rate of 10 Hz was achieved. Apart from the Nimbro- and ROS-based analyses on the Odroid-XU, further work was carried out using OpenCV. This was the case, for example, with the geometric calibration of the fisheye lens using the classic checkerboard approach, or with the line detection methods, which rely more on shape than on color features. For fundamental testing, a complete scaled-down playing field with good options for controlling lighting conditions is available. A half-sized playing field was set up at full scale, which is more dependent on ambient lighting conditions. Thermodynamics The torque of conventional drives with a given mass is limited by heat dissipation. Increasing heat transfer automatically helps to increase a drive’s average torque, as long as magnetic saturation has not been reached. This is the case with most conventional drives. One possible drive, for example, is the Dynamixel MX-28R, which is powered by an RE-max-17 motor (manufacturer: Maxon). The thermal resistance between the housing and the air for this motor is 35 K/W; in addition, there is an additional thermal resistance due to the drive’s housing. The thermal resistance between the windings and the motor housing is only 12 K/W. Reducing the thermal resistance to the air by two-thirds would double the allowable heat dissipation. This reduction can be achieved through improved heat transfer to the air. A moist surface enables additional heat dissipation through water evaporation. The drive in question has a stall current of 1.7 A and generates approximately 25 W of heat at maximum current. The motor can be operated at high current only for short periods and only with extended breaks; otherwise, it will overheat and be destroyed. These pauses can be shortened through efficient cooling of the motor [HD1]. The amount of water evaporated in relation to the heat dissipated can be calculated using the mass flow rate, where the heat dissipated is equal to the specific heat of vaporization. If one evaluates this ratio for the drive in question, it results in approximately 1 g of water evaporation per 100 s at the stall current, which, of course, cannot be sustained without pauses. Component Architecture Sweaty's computing and communication architecture consists of three levels: A high-performance mini-PC with an Intel i7 processor serves as the main computer. The operating system is Linux. The decision-making programs are written in Java, and the programs for visual environment recognition are written in C++ and Python. A main communication controller collects and distributes data between the main computer and the distributed microcontrollers and performs preliminary data analysis. The main communication controller is based on a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M4 and was developed and manufactured in-house. The distributed microcontrollers (ECUs) are also based on 32-bit ARM Cortex-M4 microcontrollers. They are built into the servos, with additional ones located in the legs and near the head. Communication between the main computer and the main communication controller is implemented via USB 2.0; communication between the main communication controller and the distributed ECUs takes place via EIA-485 at a clock frequency of 2 MHz. A dedicated communication protocol is used to ensure a standardized exchange of information, describing, among other things, how each ECU reports its current status to the central unit. Two physical EIA-485 communication networks are required to ensure sufficient data throughput. In addition to the servos’ ECUs, a total of 4 ECUs are planned: one per foot, one near the center of mass, and one in the head. The behavior of the ECUs is simulated using LTSpice and designed using EAGLE. All ECUs are based on 32-bit ARM Cortex-M4 microcontrollers. Engines Our current Sweaty uses various servos: 12 Maxon BLDC motors with lead screw drives (feet, knees, hips, back) 4x Maxon BLDC motors with planetary gearheads (arm rotation, hip rotation) 8x Dynamixel servos (arms and head) 8x linear servos (fingers) With the exception of the Dynamixel servos, all servo drives (electronics and software) were developed in-house by the Sweaty team. In our previous model, we used only commercially available servos (manufacturers: Dynamixel, Volz). To achieve sufficient movement speed with high torque, the digital servos were overloaded. The motor windings are cantilevered, so overheating leads to immediate motor failure. A thermal model of the motors was developed to continuously calculate the temperature of the windings in each individual motor. As soon as a threshold temperature is reached, Sweaty’s movements are reduced to a minimum, or he remains stationary until the motors have cooled down again—Sweaty’s behavior is therefore comparable to that of a real soccer player. Sensors The force sensors are to be mounted under the feet. Of the three inertial systems, one sensor is located near the center of gravity and the other two are in the feet to detect the Earth’s surface. For simplicity, all three inertial systems have the same design. Each of the three inertial systems consists of three accelerometers, three gyroscopes, and three magnetic field sensors from STMicroelectronics. Data acquisition and analysis are performed by our electronic control units (see component architecture). Software The software team’s main goal is to reuse as much of the 3D simulation’s program code as possible. The code’s component-based architecture makes this much easier. To give a rough idea of the success, we can say that approximately 50 classes for Sweaty were integrated into the framework. These include, among other things, a specialized inverse kinematics calculation, interface classes for ROS, a specialized component creation process, and the parameterization of certain behaviors. There is also a specialized field meta-model for the various field sizes in the Humanoid League. The number of Nao-specific classes is also approximately 50, and the number of shared classes is well over 500 (excluding tools; runtime only). Of course, during the development process, some of the 500 classes had to be adapted and modified to make them usable for a humanoid robot. By using the code components from the 3D simulation, we were also able to reap numerous benefits in terms of the toolset. We were able to adopt magmaDeveloper, the behavior editor, and several other smaller tools needed for the development and testing of such software for a bipedal robot. Simulation Sweaty is simulated in the “Simspark Simulator.” This simulator is used for the 3D soccer simulation league. It is based on ODE and supports gravity, stiffness, body dynamics, joint connections, maximum joint torque, attitude gyros, force-resistance sensors, accelerations, disturbance models, camera simulations, and much more. Design To reduce weight, the robot's load-bearing structure was made of aluminum and carbon fiber composites. Further weight reduction was achieved through a special manufacturing process: for example, the head and feet were produced using selective laser sintering (SLS), a process that allows even complex three-dimensional structures to be manufactured.Creo 2.0 was used as the CAD system, and Creo 2.0 and ANSYS were used for FEM analyses. More Information Team The Team The team consists of professors , research assistants , doctoral candidates , and students from the divisions of Maschinenbau, Process Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Medizintechnik, Informatik and Media Studies. • Black Forest Formula Team

HS Offenburg Studies Student Projects Black Forest Formula Team Black Forest Formula Team At Hochschule Offenburg, more than 20 students from various disciplines work together every year to develop a fully electric race car—from the initial idea to its debut on the track. Since 2019, we’ve been building each vehicle from the ground up. From the initial design through construction and manufacturing to testing and optimization, every component is the result of genuine teamwork. To tackle the various challenges effectively, our project is divided into the areas of mechanics, marketing, and electrical engineering. What drives us is more than just technology. It’s the combination of passion, responsibility, and the drive to work together to create something that ultimately has to prove itself under real-world conditions. That’s exactly what defines our team: We learn, develop, and grow with every new vehicle. What is Formula Student? Formula Student is an international engineering competition for students. Teams from around the world compete against each other in various disciplines—such as acceleration, endurance, and maneuverability—with race cars they have designed themselves. In addition to performance, the competition also evaluates how well a vehicle is designed, built, and presented. Safety is always the top priority. Vision Our vision is to develop innovative race cars as an interdisciplinary team, to push ourselves to new heights together, and to successfully represent Hochschule Offenburg on the international stage. Electrical Team The electrical engineering team develops all electrical components and integrates them. This includes not only the components for the powertrain in conjunction with the high-voltage battery, but also the safety logic and shutdown system, which ensures the car operates safely. Mechanics Team The team develops, designs, and manufactures all components of the vehicle's chassis, suspension, and aerodynamic systems. In addition to ensuring the most controllable handling possible, ergonomic operation of the vehicle, and the best possible transfer of drive power to the road, safety is the top priority in the development process. Marketing and Finance Team The Marketing Team is responsible for the project's external communications. This includes managing sponsors, social media, organizing events, and all activities that raise the team's public profile and ensure it presents itself professionally. Outlook for 2027 At the end of the 25/26 winter semester, we restructured our project and carefully planned our next steps. As a result, we will not be participating in any competitions during the 2026 season; instead, we will use this time to further develop our vehicle both technically and organizationally. With a clear development plan in place, we are now working toward the 2027 season. Our goal is to take to the track in the summer of 2027 with a high-performance and competitive race car. At the same time, our team continues to grow as we recruit new members in the coming semester, and we are working full steam ahead on our project. More Information Our Team Behind our project is a dedicated team of over 20 students from Hochschule Offenburg, representing up to nine different bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. We are united by the common goal of developing and building a high-performance race car and successfully competing in races. What makes our team special is that many of us contribute to the project far beyond the required course credits. With a lot of dedication, team spirit, and enthusiasm for technology, we work together to bring our race car to the track—from the initial idea to the finished product. Team Members 2026 Jasmina El Alaoui Silvio Bohnert Julian Graf Lilly Karalic Laura Kaim Niklas Kälble Lukas Oeser Anamaria Ljubic Jennifer Sbikowski Oliver Schlegel Jannik Kienzler Jonas Breitkopf Levin Fleig Arbër Morina Luca Burk Jessica Lang Join the team Would you like to join our team? At the beginning of every semester, you can submit an application through Moodle. Alternatively, you can contact us by email at any time. There are opportunities to get involved in various areas, including marketing, finance, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering. Depending on your department, your participation may also count toward a required elective course, with varying numbers of credits. If you’re interested in teamwork, technology, and a hands-on project, we look forward to hearing from you. History and Achievements The first race cars were built at Hochschule Offenburg as early as 2008 and 2012. With the BFFT2025, the project was revitalized and moved into a new phase of development. Today, we’re building on that foundation and working on the next generation of our race car, the BFFT2027—with the goal of continuing the team’s legacy. • University Orchestra

HS Offenburg Studies Student Projects University Orchestra The University Orchestra The Hochschule Offenburg Orchestra is a motivated, diverse group of students, professors, and staff who make music together. We are a group of 25 to 35 musicians with a steady influx of new members. Our repertoire includes modern wind ensemble music at the intermediate or advanced level. Join us! We’re looking for new members in the low brass section! Any member of the university community is very welcome to play with us! Currently, we especially need new members in the tenor horn, trombone, and bass (including electric bass) sections. But of course, all instrument groups are welcome! Impressions More Information Want to play? Trial Session Every rehearsal is a trial rehearsal! Just sign up quickly by email and then come play with us! Instruments Thanks to the support of the Friends and Sponsors Association of Hochschule Offenburg, we have a drum set and a pretty decent collection of percussion instruments. Otherwise, each member plays their own instrument. Audition Don’t worry—we don’t do auditions. But just dropping by a rehearsal helps us see if we’re a good fit. Rehearsals Rehearsals are held on Tuesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the Offenburg campus (lobby of Building B). In exceptional cases, rehearsals take place at the Stadtkapelle Offenburg, since we’re allowed to use their percussion equipment (timpani, tubular bells, etc.). To prepare for concerts, we organize rehearsal Saturdays or even entire rehearsal weekends. We use the “Konzertmeister” software to communicate dates and announcements within the orchestra. We expressly encourage you to come check us out! Anyone who’d like to check us out is welcome to come to a rehearsal. It’s best to let us know briefly via email beforehand . Concerts, Projects, Performances Musical Director The orchestra is currently conducted by Udo Sutter (since May 2016), who is otherwise active in the music scene in the Kehl area. He plays the trumpet himself in various ensembles, such as the Ortenau Orchestra in Offenburg, and serves as vice conductor of the Kork Music Association. Thomas Müller, a student at the University, was our conductor during the orchestra’s early years (2014 through spring 2016). After he continued his studies in England, he had to step down as music director. Organizational Management A team of four members handles all organizational matters related to the orchestra. At least one elected student member is always represented. Philipp Groß (graduate) Petra Möhringer (Library Director) Johanna Porr (student) Cédric Schwerdtfeger (Graduate) The organizing team is supported by Nadine Weber, who is primarily responsible for publicity and social media. About Our History The University Orchestra was founded in 2014 as a project orchestra on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Hochschule Offenburg, at the initiative of the then Chancellor, Thomas Wiedemer. Due to its popularity, the orchestra soon became a fixture at the University, performing regularly at various University events. We provide musical accompaniment for University celebrations, play at building inaugurations, and perform at events for first-year students. Our connection to the University is important to us. We represent the University at events such as the State Garden Show in Lahr or the Christmas markets in Offenburg and Gengenbach. Providing the musical accompaniment for a silent film at the “Shorts” event, organized by the Media Department, is and remains one of our highlights. Under the motto “Music meets Technology,” we hosted our first concert at the RIZ. It was a special evening in an unusual atmosphere—exclusive and one-of-a-kind. With the summer concert, which we introduced in 2023, our schedule is well-filled! ... and other things ;-) In addition to the music, we make sure to enjoy plenty of group activities: Anyone who’s interested is welcome to join us after rehearsal—for example, to grab a pizza and wind down the evening in a relaxed atmosphere. It’s almost become a tradition for us to go on a ski trip for a few days in February and hiking in the mountains in July. Rehearsals Time: Tuesdays, 6:00–8:00 p.m. Location: Offenburg University Campus, Foyer of Building B, or the rehearsal space of the Offenburg City Band at the Konrad-Adenauer-Schule, Platanenalle 9 Contact Möhringer, Petra Dipl.-Dok.
