April 13th, 4–6 PM, Online Workshop 1: AI-powered Data Analysis: Annotation and Classification with LLMs – for beginners without prior AI knowledge, interdisciplinary, with Christopher Klamm, Language: German, Registration via google forms
Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly being used to analyze, structure, and evaluate data, especially where large volumes of text would require immense manual effort. In this workshop, participants will learn how to use LLMs as tools for automated annotation, classification, and qualitative data assessment. Using clear examples, participants will experience step-by-step what synthetic annotation means and how LLMs can help structure data and generate initial analytical insights.
The focus is on understanding the methods, interpreting the results, and critically assessing the quality, limitations, and potential biases of the generated labels. The workshop is intentionally designed as an entry-level course and requires no programming skills. All examples will be demonstrated via easy-to-use interfaces and discussed together. The goal is to develop a solid conceptual understanding of when and how LLMs can be meaningfully integrated into data-driven processes.
The workshop is aimed at doctoral candidates from all disciplines who want a practical insight into using AI for data analysis. Programming examples will be presented optionally but are not a prerequisite for participation.
-
Target Group: Doctoral candidates of all disciplines (interdisciplinary). No programming skills required.
-
Goal: A solid foundation for meaningfully integrating AI tools into daily research.
-
Key Topics: Methodological understanding, interpreting AI results, and a critical look at bias and limitations.
-
Speaker: Christopher Klamm is an interdisciplinary researcher and expert at the intersection of Computer Science, Political Science, and Computational Linguistics. He is currently a PhD candidate and research assistant at the University of Mannheim (Data and Web Science Group) and the Cologne Center for Comparative Politics (University of Cologne).
