Conveying complex research in an understandable and captivating way may seem like an art - but it is a skill that can be learned. At the Science Communication Retreat in March 2026, doctoral students from the Hochschulen Offenburg, Karlsruhe, and Furtwangen focused not only on fundamental knowledge but on measurable learning success and practical application. To provide participants with a comprehensive and action-oriented introduction, the move.mORe team pooled its diverse expertise. The event was organized by the Graduate Academy (Dr. Carmen Kuhn) and held at a seminar house in the Black Forest.

Following a solid introduction to the essential terms, concepts, and formats of science communication by Dr. Judith Früh, participants dove straight into intensive implementation. In specialized modules, the building blocks of info-design (Jonas Thessen) and social media communication (Sarah Glaubach) were systematically developed and refined:

  • Graphic Workshop: Jonas Thessen assisted participants in visualizing complex data and content.

  • Speech Training: Lena Albers provided targeted training on confident delivery, vocal presence, and body language in presentation settings.

  • Media Workshop with Video-Feedback: In front of the camera, participants learned to present themselves and their messages clearly and convincingly across various scenarios - supported by direct video feedback from Dr. Judith Früh and Sarah Glaubach.

The defining feature of this retreat was that the techniques learned did not remain isolated exercises. In the final phase, participants integrated all elements, from infographics to video statements, into their own current research projects.

The result is a vibrant array of ideas and concrete strategies that now enable the participants to present their research with confidence, professionalism, and a focus on their target audiences.
