This lecture covers key aspects of modern power systems, starting with Transmission Network Planning, which focuses on the design and development of networks essential for transporting electrical energy efficiently. We will explore the Transition from Synchronous Machines to Grid-Forming Inverters, highlighting how these inverters stabilize the grid amidst increasing renewable energy integration. The topic of Loop Flows addresses the unintended electricity flow in interconnected systems, examining its impact on stability and operational challenges. We will also discuss high voltage direct current (HVDC), Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS), which enhance transmission network controllability and capacity.Additionally, Phase Shifting Transformers will be covered, detailing how they manage power flows by altering voltage phase angles. Finally, we will delve into Distribution Network Planning, focusing on strategies for efficiently delivering electricity to end-users while accommodating load growth and distributed energy resources. |
