Leonhard Euler - sponsor for the scientific cooperation with Russia

Professor Dr. Axel Sikora has strengthened the contact to the state University Petrozavodsk in the Russian Federation. It had transpired that both universities were researching radio-based Real-Time Localization.

In the meantime, the formalized cooperation with the SU Petrozavodsk aims to further improve the already developed localization solutions and to integrate these overlapping solutions so that a scalable recourse is possible with relation to the various measuring procedures.  The SU Petrozavodsk invited Prof. Sikora to visit the capital of the republic Karelien on the border to Finland and there he could get an impression of the versatile surroundings, the excellent infrastructure, the high motivation and the research groups’ qualifications.

The cooperation with the state University Petrozavodsk is sponsered by the DAAD in the so called Leonhard Euler Program. One of the most significant mathematicians, Leonhard Euler, who came from Basel, Switzerland (born 1707, died 1783), held the position of professor for Physics and later was a mathematician in St. Petersburg. Since 1998 his name has been given to the DAAD programme with the goal to provide contact between the qualified young scientists from Russia, the Ukraine, Belarus and Moldau and their German colleagues as well as to inspire them to create joint research projects.

In our case, the DAAD promotion relates to the availability of scholarships and mobility support which allows the young scientists to extend their research at the University of Applied Sciences Offenburg during their one-month stay there. During the winter semester 2012/13 the first doctor student from Petrozavodsk was in the laboratory for Communications Electronics. Three further students are due to arrive in Offenburg for the coming summer semester.
